Agriculture is the backbone of any nation, providing sustenance, economic growth, and employment opportunities. At Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), the Faculty of Agriculture stands as a beacon of excellence in agricultural education, research, and innovation. Established in 2006, this faculty has made remarkable strides in shaping the future of agriculture in Nigeria and beyond. This article delves into the history, achievements, programs, and future aspirations of the Faculty of Agriculture at COOU, showcasing why it is the ideal choice for aspiring agricultural professionals.
The Faculty of Agriculture at COOU was founded in 2006, marking the beginning of a journey toward agricultural excellence. From its inception, the faculty has been dedicated to providing students with a comprehensive education in agriculture by combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience. One of the early milestones was the establishment of hybrid local cattle (muturu) for research and income generation. Additionally, the faculty established a 0.4-hectare special plantation and banana farm, further enhancing the practical learning opportunities for students.
The success of the Faculty of Agriculture can be attributed to the visionary leadership of its past Deans and Heads of Department (HODs). The foundation was laid by Professor Edward C. Orji, the first Dean of the faculty, whose leadership from 2006 set the stage for future growth. His successors, including Prof. E.I.C. Nnabuife, Dr. C.O. Uzuegbunam, and Prof. A.O. Aniebo, continued to build on this foundation. Currently, Prof. C.O.A. Ugwumba, the Dean since 2020, has brought renewed energy and focus to the faculty, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of agricultural education in Nigeria.
The Faculty of Agriculture at COOU has an impressive track record of achievements that highlight its commitment to academic excellence and practical training. One of the most notable accomplishments is the establishment of a 0.4-hectare special plantain and banana plantation, which serves as a valuable resource for research and contributes to the university’s income generation efforts. In January 2022, the faculty achieved full accreditation for two of its departments—Food Science & Technology and Fisheries & Aquaculture—at the first attempt. Furthermore, the occupation of an ultramodern annexed faculty building complex with water reticulation and the expansion of the local cattle (muturu) farm underscore the faculty’s dedication to practical training and innovation. In October 2024, the faculty organized its 3rd International Agricultural Conference, providing a platform for experts, researchers, and students from around the world to share knowledge and explore innovative solutions to agricultural challenges.
The Faculty of Agriculture at COOU is not content with resting on its laurels. Its ambitious future targets include the commercialization of various agricultural products—such as rice, plantain, banana, table eggs, broiler chickens, catfish, cattle, sheep, bread, and snacks—which will not only generate income for the university but also contribute to food security and economic development. The faculty plans to expand its research and development efforts in both crop and livestock production by leveraging cutting-edge technology and best practices to develop sustainable agricultural solutions. In addition, the faculty is committed to fostering entrepreneurship and innovation among its students by establishing incubation centers where they can develop and commercialize their agricultural ideas and projects.
