Mr. L. Okoye, the current Head of the Department of Animal Science, leads with a commitment to innovative research and hands-on training in livestock management. His visionary leadership has guided the department through transformative changes, ensuring it remains a beacon of excellence in animal science.

Under his guidance, the department continues to produce graduates who excel academically and in industry, making significant contributions to the field of animal science.

A Rich History of Excellence

Established in 2005, the Department of Animal Science at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) has become a beacon of excellence in agricultural education. Despite initial challenges—including the relocation of the State College of Agriculture—the department has flourished and established itself as a leading institution in animal science. It offers a robust curriculum that blends theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, supported by state-of-the-art facilities such as commercial poultry farms, food analysis laboratories, and a mini ranch for breeding livestock. These resources enable students to gain practical skills essential for their future careers in agriculture.

Milestones and Achievements

  • Commercial Poultry Farms: Facilities that serve dual purposes of teaching and income generation, providing students with hands-on experience in poultry management.
  • Paddock/Mini Ranch: Dedicated space for breeding and propagating cows, goats, and sheep, supporting both research and practical learning.

Admission Requirements and Procedures

Undergraduate Admission:
  • UTME Requirements: Candidates must have credit passes in five O’ level subjects, including English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science, and one additional subject.
  • Direct Entry: Candidates with National Diploma, HSC, or NCE (with a minimum of lower credit in related areas plus five O’ level credits) can be admitted into the 200 level.
  • Transfer: Students from recognized universities may transfer under conditions stipulated by COOU.
Postgraduate Admission:
  • Requirements: A minimum CGPA of 3.0 in relevant fields is required for admission.
Registration Process for New Students:

New students are required to follow a step-by-step registration process, including presenting certificates for clearance, paying the necessary fees, and submitting required documents to the Faculty Officer.
